LAMal affiliation deadline for newcomers to Switzerland

Anyone settling in Switzerland must join a basic health insurance plan (LAMal) within 3 months of their official arrival date. It's a legal obligation, not an option.

The deadline is 3 months, but coverage is retroactive

Concretely, you have up to 3 months after your arrival to finalize your affiliation. Once done, your coverage applies retroactively to your actual arrival date - not the date the contract was signed. If a health issue arises before you've finished the process, you remain covered, as long as you affiliate within this deadline.

Every insurer offers the same thing

This is the least intuitive point for anyone discovering the Swiss system: LAMal is a basic insurance whose benefits are set by federal law and strictly identical from one insurer to another (consultations, hospitalization in a shared ward, medication on the specialty list, maternity care...). Only the price changes - and it varies significantly by canton, age, and chosen deductible, sometimes doubling for the exact same coverage.

What happens if you're late?

Past the 3-month deadline, affiliation remains mandatory but some insurers may apply a premium surcharge for the delayed period. The simplest approach is to act within the deadline: comparing premiums takes a few minutes, and nothing stops you from doing it in your very first days after arrival, without waiting to be settled in every other aspect of life in Switzerland.
